Equations are detected and replaced with placeholders before the surrounding text is translated. Afterwards they are put back and re-typeset as LaTeX, so each formula keeps its symbols, structure and numbering.
The page is analysed as it looks, not from the LaTeX source, so it does not depend on the class that produced the PDF. Papers in the common journal and conference styles are the main use, and complex pages can still need a check.
